It’s the time of year for New Year’s resolutions and we at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care think it’s a good idea to resolve to take better care of your feet this year. It doesn’t require a lot of time or effort—just a commitment to some basic foot care practices. Below are five easy ways to ensure good podiatric health this year.

  1. Commit to a daily care regimen. Taking just a few minutes each day, you can greatly reduce your risk of bacterial and fungal infections in your feet. Wash feet every day with soap and warm water. Dry completely and be especially careful to get the spaces between your toes. Use a foot powder each morning to help keep feet dry if you sweat excessively. A good moisturizer at night can keep skin supple and prevent heel cracks.
  2. Buy better shoes. Your footwear choice is one of the biggest factors in preventing foot problems. It’s important to wear shoes that fit properly. Some studies estimate that as many as 90% of people are wearing shoes that are too small for their feet. Your feet can get larger as you age. Get your feet professionally measured. Look for styles with low heels and a roomy toe box to help prevent toe deformities such as bunions and hammertoes.
  3. Examine your feet regularly. Nearly all foot problems have a better outcome if they are treated in their early stages. Look over your feet, top and bottom, and note any discoloration of the skin, changes in nails, bruises, swelling or lumps. Be sure to report anything unusual to our podiatrists, Dr. Ben Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah who will examine your feet and find out if you have a condition that needs treatment.
  4. Practice good nail care. Nails should be trimmed, but not too short. Never file toenails with rounded edges as this may encourage skin to grow over the nail and create an ingrown toenail. Don’t pick at your nails or cuticles as this may lead to an infection.
  5. Don’t ignore foot pain! Putting off seeking treatment will only make foot conditions worse and even cause additional injury. At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care we want our patients to recognize that your feet are amazing structures! They are made up of 56 bones, 60 joints, and over 200 muscles, ligaments, and tendons between the pair of them. They also take you where you want to go and enable you to walk, stand, run and do pretty much all your daily activities. Don’t they deserve the best treatment possible? Being proactive about podiatric health means adopting good habits that will help keep your feet and ankles at their best. Below are 5 suggestions for good foot health:

  1. Take good care daily. Be sure to wash your feet every day with soap and water. Apply a good quality moisturizer if your feet tend to be dry. Use a foot powder if your sweat excessively.
  2. Keep nails trimmed properly. Toenails should be cut straight across (no curved edges) and not too short to prevent ingrown toenails from developing.
  3. Wear flip-flops or shower shoes when you are walking in public places. This will protect your feet from fungal infections which thrive in warm, moist places like community pools, nail salons, and gym locker rooms.
  4. Choose good shoes. One of the biggest ways to ensure lifelong foot health is to buy good quality shoes that fit properly. Get your feet professionally measured periodically because your size can change as you age. Shoes should have good arch support and tread to help prevent slips and falls. Avoid heels over two inches high and narrow toes boxes that squeeze toes together.
  5. Check feet regularly. Look your feet over for changes in shape, toes moving out of position, skin color discoloration, bruises, blisters or other abnormalities. In April we celebrate Foot Health Awareness Month. At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care, we thought this would be a good opportunity to dispel some myths that can hurt your feet. Many times, patients act on erroneous information that can lead to serious harm to the feet and ankles. Below are some of the more common myths we hear:

MYTH: Sticking cotton under the toenail is a good way to treat an ingrown nail. Wrong! Neither is cutting a notch in the nail or trying to dig out the ingrown nail with a sharp instrument. “Bathroom surgery” can lead to serious bacterial infection and disfiguring injuries. Have one of our podiatrists, Dr. Varun (Ben) Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah examine and treat any foot problems you are experiencing. Forget folk remedies when it comes to caring for foot conditions.

MYTH: Once you know your shoe size you can save time and buy shoes without trying them on. Unfortunately, shoe sizes are not standard across brands. If you buy shoes without trying them on and they are uncomfortable, many people just end up keeping them, which can greatly harm your feet. Shoes that are too tight in the toe box or rub in the wrong spot at the back of your heel hasten the development of crippling deformities, such as bunions and Haglund’s deformity (pump bump). In addition, your shoe size can change as you age or if you are pregnant. It’s best to have your foot professionally measured when you shop for shoes and then take your time trying them on and walking around to ensure comfort and proper fit.

MYTH: If you can walk on it, your foot or ankle is not sprained or broken. This myth has caused the worsening of many feet and ankle injuries. Being able to bear weight on an injured foot does not at all mean that it is not damaged. Sprains and fractures, particularly stress fractures, can hurt off and on after the initial injury. If you believe you have injured your foot or ankle, it’s important that you contact our Monmouth Junction, Edison or Monroe office in New Jersey as soon as possible and allow one of our foot doctors to evaluate your injury. Chronic conditions such as weak ankles and arthritis are often the result of not promptly treating and fully rehabilitating foot and ankle injuries.
