Spring has finally sprung and that means our beautiful New Jersey hiking trails are beckoning our patients at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care. While we are all for getting some exercise and enjoying the outdoors, we often see ankle and knee injuries along with foot pain and sore muscles after a strenuous day hike. To help prevent these problems, we offer the following suggestions:

  1. Check on chronic conditions. If you are experiencing an ongoing podiatric issue like flat feet or plantar fasciitis, schedule a checkup with our podiatrists, Dr. Varun Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah to assess your current condition. The foot doctor can make recommendations regarding hiking shoe style and trail conditions that would make hiking more comfortable and enjoyable. If the podiatrist has prescribed a custom orthotic device, make sure it fits in your hiking shoes.
  2. Consider trek poles. They look like ski poles, but trek poles are designed to be used on ground. They can help you maintain proper form and reduce strain and fatigue in your lower extremities. This in turn will reduce your risk of injury.
  3. Choose the right hiking shoes. Hiking footwear comes in a variety of styles. High top versions provide additional ankle support but may be heavier, leading more quickly to fatigue. All hiking boots should have a good tread for gripping uneven surfaces. Be sure to condition your boots before setting out to ensure that they are waterproof.
  4. Keep feet dry. When feet get sweaty friction is created which can cause painful blisters to form. Staying in damp socks for long periods of time can also lead to fungal infections. Look for hiking socks that wick moisture away from your skin.
  5. Pack a smart pack. Bring a basic first aid kit, some pieces of moleskin and extra socks in your pack. These small items can come in handy in a big way for eliminating discomfort on the trail.
