During her first pregnancy, Kim Kardashian was always spotted wearing high heel designer shoes even when her feet swelled up to double their normal size. Even though Kim may have looked great in those designer shoes, it doesn’t mean she felt great especially trying to squeeze swollen feet into narrow shoes. It appears that Kim has learned though because now that she is pregnant with her second child, Kim has been spotted going for a stroll in slippers instead of high heeled shoes. Even though Kim still feels uncomfortable and is getting some swelling she says things are going better for her this time around than it did during her first pregnancy.

Swelling of the feet and ankles is something that often affects women when they are pregnant. There are many causes that contribute to foot and ankle swelling during pregnancy but one of the biggest contributing factors is that the body will retain more fluid during pregnancy. Also, as the uterus grows, it will put pressure on the veins that return blood to the heart from the legs and if the blood can’t go back to the heart it will pool around the feet and ankles leading to swelling. If you are suffering from swelling in your feet and ankles during pregnancy, there are some simple things you can do to help reduce some of that swelling.

Try to avoid being on your feet for long periods of time. Whenever you get the chance, try to sit or lay down with your feet elevated as this will help to return blood/fluid that has pooled in your feet and ankles back to the circulation. When you sleep at night, try to sleep on your left side. The reason for this is that when you sleep on your left side, it takes pressure off a large vein that return blood from your legs back to your heart and this can also help to reduce swelling especially if you keep your legs elevated. Swelling occurs because fluid leaks from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. You can reverse this by increasing the pressure in the tissues by wearing compression stockings. This will act to push the fluid back into the blood vessels and return it to the circulation. Low impact physical activity such as walking or swimming in a pool can help to relieve swelling. The pressure from the water seems to compress tissues in the leg and provide temporary relief from swelling. Also, the cool water may be soothing to the swollen areas.
