As lawns begin to get green in Edison, Monmouth Junction and Monroe, we at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care know that many of our patients will be getting ready for the first mow of the season. Before you do, we’d like to remind you of some important lawn mower safety tips.

Every year there are thousands of emergency room visits as a result of lawn mower injuries. The vast majority of these can be prevented with the proper precautions. Below are some tips to remember:

  • If you have a new mower, read the operator’s manual before using the mower for the first time. Follow all instructions.
  • For older mowers, before the start of the season, have your mower inspected and serviced to make sure there is no damage or defects in the machine. Check with a professional if you have questions about adjusting the blade or operating the mower.
  • Always wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes when mowing. NEVER mow your lawn barefoot.
  • Don’t mow a lawn that is wet. Mowers slipping on wet grass is one of the major causes of injuries.
  • Mow a sloped lawn by going up and down, not side to side.
  • Know where your children are when you are mowing. Instruct them not to come out on the lawn when you are using the mower as it can be difficult to hear them approaching.
  • Never allow your children to ride on the mower with you.
  • Don’t make sudden or sharp turns with the mower.
  • Collect sticks, rocks and other objects before mowing. These can be picked up and shot out of the mower at high speed causing injury to bystanders.
  • Do not attempt to go backwards when mowing.
  • Wear long pants to mow. If you do get a cut or injury, no matter how minor it may seem, stop immediately and clean the wound. Then apply antibiotic ointment and a bandage before continuing. If the cut does not appear to be healing properly in a day or two, contact one of our offices for an appointment. Our podiatrists, , Dr. Varun Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah will want to check your injury and be sure that it is healing properly.
