It occurs to you one day that your foot has been hurting for a while. At first, you thought you might have slept on it funny or a pair of shoes bothered you, but now it appears to be pretty consistent day after day. You don’t recall injuring your foot and or see any overt reason for the pain. At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care we hear this scenario more often than you’d expect. When the source of foot pain isn’t obvious, that’s when our podiatrists, Dr. Varun (Ben) Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah, have to do some digging. What they find may surprise you.

  1. You’ve injured your back (or knee or hip). Pain or injury in your back or anywhere in the lower half of your leg may alter the way you walk as your body tries to subconsciously shift away from the pain. This, in turn, can cause pain in your feet.
  2. Kicking your shoes off. A reason that comes up more commonly in the summer months is going barefoot. Wearing no shoes (or flip-flops) more frequently can result in a flattening of the arch, which leads to arch and heel pain. Without shoes, you’re also depriving your feet of the shock absorbing power of soles which means your foot is getting the full impact of every step which can lead to foot pain.
  3. You’re buying the wrong size shoes. If you’ve been wearing the same size for a decade or more and don’t even bother trying on the shoes you buy, there’s a good chance that you’re wearing shoes that are too tight. Your feet can get larger with age. Get your feet professionally measured. Try shoes on and walk around for a while before purchasing. Remember, a “breaking in” period is a myth—shoes should fit properly from the onset.
  4. An intensive exercise program has caused a hidden injury. If you started your new exercise program a few months back and are just starting to experience foot pain now, you may not make the connection, but stress fractures are generally caused by overuse. Swelling is another sign of a possible stress fracture. Pain may only be present during and immediately after exercise and then subside.
  5. Scale creep. If you gain 3 or 4 pounds you may not notice it in the mirror or even the fit of your favorite jeans, but it can have a large effect on your feet. Your feet experience the impact of 2 to 3 times your body weight when you walk, so every pound gained delivers a double or triple whammy to your feet.

Take control of your diabetes. Besides keeping your blood glucose at your ideal target range, if you haven’t already, consider a podiatrist as part of your health care team to help you manage and take control of your health. Every day foot checks. Take the time DAILY to inspect your bare feet. Look for changes, swelling, redness, blisters, rashes, or cuts. Someone else or a mirror may be helpful if you are unable to see the bottom of your feet. If you have concerns contact your podiatrist immediately, it is essential to maintain open communication with your podiatrist about the condition of your feet.

Foot hygiene. It is important to wash your feet on a daily basis, and it is just as important to dry your feet, especially in between your toes after a proper wash. If you are an individual who sweats a lot, consider options to change your socks throughout the day. Maintaining an environment for your feet that avoids moisture and dampness is ideal. If you choose to have pedicures done at a salon, consider bringing your own pedicure kit to avoid infection.

Keep blood flow in mind. As you go about your day, consider ways to enhance your body’s ability to keep blood flowing to your feet. Never sit or sit crossed legged for long periods of time. If possible elevate feet when sitting. Choose not to smoke, and do your best to remain hydrated. Habitual toe wiggling/crunching and ankle movement in 2-3 repetitions for 5 minutes throughout the day better maintains circulation to feet. Guard your feet against cold and hot temperatures. Test water temperatures, and do not use heating pads and blankets on your feet because burns can happen and you may not even realize it.

Never walk bare feet. It is smart to wear shoes and socks at all times to avoid sustaining an injury you are unaware of.  Before putting on shoes check the shoe and lining to insure they are smooth and there is nothing inside that may cause friction, blister, or injury.

Holiday DIY Feet painting craft is here again! It’s time to crank out the acrylic paint, construction or Scrap paper to make a festive Thanksgiving Turkey with your toddler.


Brown, dark brown, red, white, pink, black, Acrylic Paint.

Canvas: 9x12 inch white canvas if you want to go all out, or a white piece of paper will work fine too (if it turns out you really like your craft and you had chosen the white piece of paper option, you can always cut it out and put it in a picture frame, or laminate it and turn it into a decorative placemat). 

Small and Medium round Paint Brushes


Construction and/or Scrapbook paper


  1. Decide if you want to put your turkey on a canvas or paper. Whichever choice you made, set aside for later use.
  2. Give your child a few choices of construction or scrapbook paper to create the feathers. After 5 papers are selected and decorated, draw and cut the desired feather shape on the back of each paper. Set aside to later place on final paper or canvas.  
  3. Get your paints out and squeeze paint onto a paper plate (nickel to quarter size for each.)
  4. Have your child sit on a surface where you can paint their feet. Accessible to somewhere you can rinse their feet is always a perk. Easy clean up always makes for a good project.
  5. Paint your child’s foot. Special note: You are creating the body of the turkey. Do not place the footprint (turkey body) on your canvas or final piece of paper. You will cut your footprint out and place it on top of the feathers, on top of your canvas or final paper.  Press paper against your child’s painted foot creating your desired shape. Be sure to wiggle and press each toe onto the paper so nothing is missed. If you feel you need to practice on a plain sheet of paper first, do so.
  6. Set the footprint paper somewhere safe and go and wash your kid’s feet. You can do partial clean up at this point while you wait for paint to dry.
  7. After the paint on the turkey body has dried, you can move to part two of the project. Complete the feet design as pictured. Create the eyes, cheeks, gobble, beak, turkey legs, and feather placement on canvas. Drawing lightly with a pencil first is a good policy to allow for redo’s. Include highlights around feathers by using acrylic colors and the small paint brush. 
  8. Add a background and/or phrase to canvas. EX: trees, sun, dirt, grass EX: “Gobble ‘Till You Wobble!”  “Happy Turkey Day,” or “My Little Turkey”.
  9. Finalize your craft by writing your child’s name or initials, year, and age on the front or back of canvas.

For many, Corns and Calluses are an unsightly condition that most people want to keep hidden so others can’t see them. Many who develop corns and calluses will try to keep the problem hidden in their shoes and try home remedies to make them go away without realizing the potential complications that they can lead to. Calluses typically occur on areas of the skin that are placed under repeated pressure or experience repeated friction, corns are calluses that occur on the top of the toes. Corns and calluses are more than just a cosmetic issue; they change the quality of the skin damaging its elastic properties. If the skin can’t stretch, then it’s going to tear and if it tears it will quickly crack. This is especially problematic because cracks in the skin form a portal for bacteria to enter which will easily lead to an infection. Corns and calluses are especially problematic for diabetic patients because they can lead to the development of diabetic foot ulcers which are the one of the leading causes for foot amputations.

Corns and calluses can be easily prevented by wearing properly fitted shoes that minimize pressure and friction on your feet. You can also use padding to help protect areas of your feet that are susceptible to callus formation. If you do develop a callus, don’t try to remove it on your own, seek expert care from a podiatrist. They might try trimming away the dead skin composing the callus. Don’t try this on your own because if you cut too deep you could cause a serious injury to yourself or at the very least create a portal for bacteria entry. Your doctor may also try applying a keratolytic agent to the callus which is a weak acid that will eat away at the dead skin.

If you have an underlying foot deformity that is causing these problems, your doctor may make a mold of your foot in order to design a custom foot orthotic for you to offload the area and prevent the callus from returning. In very rare cases if the calluses are being caused by a boney deformity or a misalignment of the bones, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the deformity or correct the misalignment. Do smelly feet hold you back from doing certain activities with friends or family? If so, you are not alone, many people experience the problems of foot odor at some point throughout their life and try real hard to hide it. Foot Odor can be caused by a vast number of things; some of the most common factors include overusing one pair of shoes, excessive sweating in the shoes, and a lack of ventilation. A warm and moist environment creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi which over time will multiply and accumulate and eventually create that awful smell that’s stinking up your favorite pair of shoes. If foot odor is a problem for you there are some simple tips you can do to stop foot odor from controlling your life.

  • Deodorize the Shoe: You can easily deodorize the inside of your shoes by placing baking soda inside your shoes every night and then dump it out the next day. Also, cedar chips have anti-fungal properties which can be placed in your shoes overnight as well.


  • Freeze your shoes: You can kill much of the bacteria and fungi in your shoes by freezing them. Place your shoes in a plastic bag and stick them in the freezer overnight and you’ll notice a dramatic decrease in the smell of your shoes. Just remember to let them thaw out before you put them on.


  • Wash your shoes: If you have shoes that are machine washable it would be a good idea to wash your shoes in detergent at least once a month to get rid of any dirt and grime in your shoes. Just remember to let them dry out real good before wearing them again.


  • Use baby powder on your feet: If your feet sweat a lot, this could attract bacteria to them and cause them to smell bad. To prevent this from happening, you need to keep them dry by using baby powder or something similar to it on your feet. You can put a layer of baby powder on your feet and then put socks on and then another layer in your shoes before wearing them. This will not only keep your feet dry but they will smell like baby powder which is much better than the other alternatives.


  • Manage your foot hygiene: Probably the most important tip for preventing foot odor is to maintain good foot hygiene. One should clean their feet daily by cleaning them in the shower with soap making sure to clean in between the toes. Alternatively, one could soak their feet in a vinegar solution or Epsom Salt solution. Whichever method you choose, make sure to dry your feet well afterwards. You can also put deodorant on your feet just make sure to keep a stick that is meant only for your feet.


  • Have more than one pair of shoes: Try not to wear the same shoe more than two days in a row. Have an extra pair that you could switch out and wear the next day. Also allow the other pair of shoes a chance to dry out.
